FOUR foreigners were arrested for possession of over 105kg of stolen copper cables in Cottonlands recently.

According to Verulam SAPS communications officer Mark Prakasim the arrests were made as a result of tip-off from the community. "Police received a tip-off about the stolen copper and this group and we conducted an operation to arrest the suspects," said Prakasim. "Police were able to arrest them and it was discovered that the copper was mostly from a cellular network tower in the area." At the time of the arrests, Prakasim said police found the men cleaning and packing the copper for sale.
"They are being held in custody pending further investigations," said Prakasim.

The suspects are due to appear soon for charges of theft related to copper cables. Prakasim urged the community to continue working with police to ensure criminal activity is stopped.

"The theft of copper is damaging infrastructure and costing thousands of rands in damages. This is hampering businesses and is having an effect on the community as a whole," said Prakasim.
