THE T20 Cricket World Cup in India will no doubt create much excitement, interest and enthusiasm among cricket lovers.

The stage in all parts of India will be set alight and millions throughout the world will remain glued to their television sets as some of the world’s best take to the pitch.

This excitement is being felt in the Tonver region as pupils in the boys under 11 divisions just completed three days of cricket in the Durban North area testing their skill among the best in KwaZulu-Natal.

The North Coast teams, normally the whipping boys at the KZN festivals, grew in status this year as they narrowly lost a few games and won two of the 30 over games. Players who excelled at the festival were Milan Choudree and James Drysdale of Crawford North Coast and Asande Nyawose of Maidstone Primary School.

This festival was a fitting farewell to coach Mike Whitehead, presently principal of Maidstone Primary School who almost 30 years ago started with North Coast cricket.

He gets a well deserved retirement next January and coaching this team gave him the opportunity to pass on the fine techniques of the sport.

Whitehead’s knowledge of coaching and cricket in general has inspired North Coast cricket over the years.

North Coast chairperson Guru Ramcharan thanked him for his yeomen service to schools’ cricket and wished him well in his forthcoming years.

Meanwhile further selection for the North Coast continues.

Boys under 13 selection of districts are set as follows:

Friday 11 March at 2pm at the following venues:

Tongaat - Maidstone Country Club;

Verulam - Verulam Recreational Grounds;

Phoenix - Stonebridge Grounds.

The final coast selections will take place on Monday, 14 March at the Stonebridge Grounds in Phoenix.

The team will participate in the under 13 KZN festival in September.

Girls under 13 cricket:

Good news for girls under 13 is that a full girls under 13 tournament is set for 29 April in the Hillary/Malvern area. North Coast selections takes place on Friday 11 March at the Outspan Grounds in Tongaat at 2pm.

For more information, contact Marlon Moodley at Flambel Primary.

Schools are encouraged to send girls with potential and talent to their training.
