Exercise your right to vote

2016-01-28 06:00

SOUTH Africa is a constitutional democracy. This miraculous dispensation was achieved through the sacrifices made by many patriotic citizens.

Some were tortured, banned, detained, exiled, etc, whilst some were assassinated by the apartheid regime.

We owe it to the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to treasure our rights as enshrined in our constitution.

The constitution makes provision for the citizens to participate in the electoral processes. Sadly, this tenet is ignored by a considerable amount of people generally owing to apathy.

It is common knowledge that providing the electoral processes are ‘free and fair’’, you get the government you vote for. Far too many people complain when service delivery is mediocre yet will not have made any effort to vote.

In a few months’ time, South Africa will have an opportunity to make their votes count in the local government election. I need to implore the readers to get involved as municipal services like refuse removal, sewage disposal, pot-holes, blocked pipelines, etc affect us all on a regular basis.

To vote in the forthcoming local election, legislation dictates that one must be registered to vote.

Furthermore, if registered, the potential voter can only vote in the designated voting district. To verify your status, the reader can simply send an sms to 32810.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will return the sms with the updated details.

The municipality has made provision for people to register. All one needs to do is visit your local Sizakala Centre with your Identity document. Furthermore, the IEC will be conducting voter registrations in all the voting districts.

Such details will be advertised by the political parties and the IEC.

As ratepayers and taxpayers, our hard earned money is utilised to fund the machinery of the municipality. It is now time for the people to take the initiative to influence the direction of our local government.
