Falcons athletes soar in Chatsworth Marathon

THE Rising Sun Chatsworth ultra-marathon (52 km), half marathon (21.1 km) and 10km was held at Chatsworth Stadium last Sunday. The route took athletes through Chatsworth’s residential streets, Higginson Highway and Silverglen Nature Reserve, encountering many turns and hills.

Falcons’ comrades silver medalist Derick Gumende was in prolific form and flatten down the hilly terrain to finish the 52 km in a time of 3:26. His scintillating time earned him an overall seventh position. He was the first runner home for the north coast region.

Mmeli Alex Ngcobo followed in a time of 5:11, with Lindiwe Hlongwa finishing 5:14. Hlongwa received the third position in the female 40-49 age category.

The following Falcons’ marathon runners finished under six hours were Nkosingiphile Mkhize, Bonginkosi Ngubane, Felokwakhe Nxumalo and Bhekuthando Ngcobo.

In the inaugural 21.1km distance, Bala Govender once again displayed his strength on the hills and completed in 1:59. Govender was followed by Two Oceans 2017 Bronze Medal Finisher Logan Pillai (2:05) and Sophia Ismail (2:06). The three runners had a sub 6 minute per km finish across the difficult course. Walking Legend Eddie Singh completed the 10 km walk to received second position with his time 1:08. - Supplied.
