A 56-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by Tongaat police after he stabbed his girlfriend several times with a knife at their cottage in Umbhayi Informal settlement on Sunday.

It alleged the couple were arguing before the incident.

Residents, who heard the woman scream, went to investigate and found the man still inside.

Angry residents beat him up before handing him over to the Tongaat SAPS.

The woman died at the scene due to the extent of her injuries.

Police spokesperson in Tongaat Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie confirmed that a case of murder is being investigated by the police.

Maharaj-Marie said the police responded to a call from Umbhayi and upon arrival the victim was declared dead. “The suspect was arrested and is in police custody. He will be charged and appear in court.”

At the time of going to press the name of the deceased was not released until her next of kin are informed.
