VERULAM 2 where involved in a low scoring thriller against Umlazi Cricket Club in the 40 over Challenge League at the Sidmore Grounds in Phoenix at the weekend.

Umlazi won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket offering plenty for the bowlers.

Verulam 2 manager, Santosh Premlal said the wicket was good for the bowlers who stuck to their lines and lengths.

“The ball was also spinning well and all our bowlers were effective on the pitch,” said Premlal.

Rowen Sheomungal got Verulam off to the perfect start with 2 wickets in the first over.

“They were immediately on the back foot and they struggled to build any partnerships because our bowlers took regular wickets along the way,” said Premlal.

Umlazi were eventually bowled out for 81 with each bowler picking up a wicket.

Verulam got off to the worst of starts as they lost opener Dhiren Balwanth for 0 after he was clean bowled in their reply.

“It was a great fight from Umlazi and they fielded and bowled well. They put us under a lot of pressure and managed to take 4 of our batsmen for ducks,” said Premlal.

Pressure built with the quick fall of wickets and Verulam were in desperate need of some stability as they required 35 runs with 3 wickets in hand at the end.

The partnership came in the form of Linoshan Moodley and Ismaeel Mohamad who steadied the innings and helped Verulam win by 2 wickets.

“It was a tough match and it was good to see the tail hold their nerves with bat in hand,” said Premlal.
