THE Mandela Day marathon is a tribute to the great leader and freedom struggle stalwart, Nelson Mandela.

The marathon has trademarks, 8km long “struggle hill” followed by the 2km long “challenge climb.”

Mzwanele Shabani showed his endurance and pace to complete the uphill marathon in 03.18 as Falcons’ first marathon runner.

Other Falconers’ Nkosingiphile Mkhize, Prudence Ngiba, Bhekithemba Ncube and Goodness Magubane also completed the difficult marathon. Thulani Hlatshwayo and Abdool Haque Essack participated in the half marathon and finished 2:05 and 2:23 respectively.

Sixty-six-year-old Abdool Essack, who finished 25th in 60+ age category, enjoyed the atmosphere and scenery in the midlands race.

Falcons hosted their development league Asmal’s Hypersave on Sunday.

Locals ran or walked across the 21.1km, 15km, 10km and 5km distances.

Checkout Verulam Falcons AC’s Charity 5km Fun Run on this Saturday, 2 September, 8am, Verulam Secondary School Grounds.
