THE three elected ward councillors for Verulam and Tongaat promise service delivery to residents and be accountable to the community.

Geoff Pullan (Ward 58), Dolly Munien (Ward 61) and Johnson Chetty (Ward 106) were among the 220 councillors that were sworn in at an inauguration at Durban City Hall on 23 August.

The nomination of the three Democratic Alliance councillors came after the party snatched the strongholds of the ANC in Verulam and Tongaat in the local government elections.

The disputed wards 58 and 106 in Waterloo will see the new leadership of Pullan and Chetty.

They took over from the ANC councillor Mxolisi Ndzimbomvu and other independent candidates representing the ANC in Ward 58 and Ward 106 in Waterloo.

In Ward 61 Munien replaces former ANC councillor Michael Abraham.

“I am not making any promises and will not mislead the community, but I will try my best to bring about good service delivery to the community.

“This is my pledge as the ward councillor and I accept the responsibility that the people of Tongaat have given me. I am committed to working for the people.

“My task as the newly elected ward councillor is to reach new heights and to raise the bar through interventions that will change our town for the better,” said Munien.

Pullan said he was ecstatic to be elected the new Ward 58 councillor and promised good service delivery.

“I promise to do as I have been doing ever since I became a councillor. My first priorities are to investigate and audit the public housing lists and this will establish who the beneficiaries are.

“I also want residents to get their title deeds. Another issue is the litter in Ward 58.

“I have contacted the municipality to understand how and who gets the contracts to collect the refuse.

“Whatever we are currently doing does not seem to be working. As the ward councillor I am able to negotiate employment with various state and municipal agencies.

“My other focus is better provision of services to the community.

“Water and electricity provision is not good, so I am chasing officials to improve these services,” he said.

Chetty said his first priority is to listen to the concerns of the community.

“As the DA in Verulam we have a good track record of delivering. People felt deserted and supported the DA.

“We will be accountable to the community and ensure that we take the issue of service delivery very seriously,” he said.

In addition to that Zandile Gumede was sworn in as the new mayor of eThekwini Municipality taking over from councillor James Nxumalo.

Lekgoe Mapena was elected the new speaker for eThekwini Municipality taking over from councillor Logie Naidoo.
