“The community must be vigilant of people selling letters from a councillor’s office as this is against the policies of eThekwini Municipality. I give the service to the community free of charge and we do not sell letters. I became suspicious in November and went to investigate at the testing grounds, but didn’t find anything. I then made a sworn affidavit to clear my name that I was not selling letters to the community,” Langa said.

Langa said after he investigated further he found that residents from outside Verulam were desperate to book their licence and were looking for ‘shortcuts’ therefore they purchased these letters at the testing station confirming their residence.

“Members of the public who have fallen victim to this scam must come forward and report either to the police or to my office.”

Langa suspected that the arrested suspects were working in cahoots with one of the employees working from his office.

“We are disappointed at the manner in which the driving schools are looting the unsuspecting members of the community. I would like to commend the police for a job well done in arresting the suspects.”

KZN police spokesperson, colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed that two suspects were arrested.

“The suspects were charged for fraud and appeared at the Verulam Magistrate’s court on 6 December. The case was adjourned to 23 January 2017.”
