NEWLY-appointed social worker Snegugu Zandamela (25) who has been deployed to work at the SAPS Tongaat trauma centre, promised to tackle social problems that plague communities on the North Coast.

Zandamela, a graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, will be offering trauma counseling to the victims of domestic abuse, rape, hijacking and other social problems.

Her placement was made possible by Lifeline in conjunction with the Tongaat SAPS.

She said the AIDS Foundation of South Africa started funding Lifeline in July last year to look at the issues pertaining to intimate partner violence (IPV) in the South African communities.

“My placement on the North Coast is to a first respondent in various issues ranging from domestic abuse, rape, HIV testing, hijacking and anything that deals with trauma counseling.
We will be embarking on outreach campaigns and raising awareness in schools and communities.”

Police spokesperson in Tongaat Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said: “We appreciate the efforts made by the Lifeline to place a social worker at the station for the first time. We have volunteers working at the trauma centre and their work is absolutely amazing.
“We hope Zandamela will add on the work that are volunteers have been doing in the past.”

For further details call the Tongaat trauma centre on 032 944 9932.
