“This initiative is the first of its kind in the Verulam area and we can confirm that it is a pilot project. We will be visiting other schools in the Verulam area to ensure that pupils learn in a safe environment. Members of the SAPS assisted us in conducting the operation.”

A member of Safety and Security Committee in Verulam Secondary Kuban Siva said the aim is to raise awareness and create a safe environment for the community.

“We took part with other role players to raise awareness about drugs and dangerous weapons. I am happy and confident because children will be aware about the eradication of drugs. They know that if they bring it [drugs] to school, they will be prosecuted. We will be working as a team in the Verulam area to make sure that children at school are not using drugs.”

“We found some substances on the floor while searching pupils, but we were unable to find out if it was pupils who dropped the stuff. No one knew we were coming to the school,” said Sergeant Clinton Adayar from the Umhlali K9 Unit. Principal Siva Govender said Couver Security had approached him about conducting search on pupils.

“A former pupil from the school, who works for the security company approached us and said she wants to give back to the community of Verulam by volunteering her services.
“I would like to have such random searches often at schools so that parents will know their children are safe at school.”

Police spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim confirmed that cigarettes and an unknown tablet were found.

“We want to thank the security company for their endeavour in assisting us in the efforts to make schools a safer place for the future leaders of our country.”
