THERE was great jubilation among the matric class of 2015 who excelled, achieving significantly better than the KZN and National average at Protec.

All 34 Protec matriculants passed, with 91% of the students achieving university passes. There were a total of 79 subject distinctions with seven distinctions in math, eight distinctions in physical science and four distinctions in English.

The top pupils, Precise Mbense and Mpumelelo Mkhosana achieved seven distinctions followed by Asemahle Mmonelwa with six distinctions and Kwanwele Khuzwayo, Akshay Rajkumar, Minenhle Mbatha and Lungani Ngcobo with five distinctions each.

"We are extremely proud of our pupils who worked consistently hard throughout the year and the most important thing about these results is that they enable our pupils to pursue meaningful careers," said PROTEC Tongaat manager Marion Takis.

The majority of the class of 2015 are pursuing careers in medicine, finance and engineering.

“As a non-profit organisation PROTEC is fully dependent on donations so we are extremely grateful to our financial partners such as Tongaat Hulett, BMG, Altech/UEC, FFS Refiners, SITFE, Sun International, the Fulton Trust and the Gus and Maureen Attridge Trust for enabling us to make such a difference to these young peoples’ lives," said Takis.

Protec Tongaat is a career development programme promoting maths, science and technological literacy and education for pupils in Grades 10, 11 and 12.
