Rape suspect appears in court

A MAN accused of raping a Tongaat woman appeared at the Verulam Magistrate­’s Court last week.

Philani Mbatha (27), is facing charges of the rape of a 25-year old woman last month at her home.

Police spokesperson in Tongaat Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj- Marie­ said Mbatha entered the victim’s house and demanded cash. The suspect allegedly forced the victim into the bedroom and raped her.

According to the information received from Tongaat SAPS, the victim reported a case of a rape at Tongaat station­.

Subsequent to that the police launched a manhunt and the suspect was arrested in Tongaat.

“The suspect had initially asked the victim to give him a glass of water and when the victim went inside, he followed her and shoved her to the bedroom where he allegedly raped her. He demanded cash from the victim. A radio and a cellphone were taken,” she said.

The suspect is remanded in custody until his next appearance in court.
