Motor vehicle collision: Verulam

MEMBERS of the Reaction Units SA (Rusa) responded to an accident at approximately 6.30pm on Monday 3 October.

Officers were dispatched to the south bound lane of the R102 in between the Verulam and Ottawa intersection after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision.

Upon arrival a Hyundai Getz was found in the right hand lane facing the flow of traffic.

The driver claimed the while travelling on the R102, a blue Toyota Corolla knocked into his vehicle causing it to spin out of control.

The Hyundai Getz crashed into the metal barrier separating the north and south bound lanes. The driver of the Toyota Corolla did not stop at the scene.

Both occupants of the Hyundai Getz were not injured in the crash.

Suspect apprehended: Verulam

A suspect was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa after he attempted to break into a home on Fairview Drive in Brindhaven, Verulam­ on Tuesday 4 October.

Officers were dispatched to the residence after a 22-year-old female contacted the Rusa Operations Centre reporting that a suspect was on her property.

Upon arrival a neighbour informed officers that he had noticed the suspect attempting to open a window. When he questioned the suspect he claimed that he was working on the property.

The neighbour then noticed the suspect jumping over the boundary wall and fleeing from the property.

Officers obtained a description of the suspect and while on patrol found him walking on Dianthus Road. When he noticed the approaching Rusa patrol vehicle he attempted to flee, but was he apprehended.

The suspect was positively identified by neighbours as the person who attempted to break into the home.

Children injured in collision: Verulam­

Three children aged 6, 8 and 10 years were injured following a collision on the R102 near the Ottawa intersection.

At approximately 11.30am on Saturday 8 October members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from passing motorists reporting the incident.

Upon arrival a Toyota Hilux bakkie was found to have collided into the back of a BMW.

The force of the impact resulted in the two older boys, who were seated at the back of the bakkie, to be thrown against the back glass.

Both boys suffered cuts to their faces from the broken glass.

The six-year-old boy, who was seated in the front of the bakkie, slammed against the dash board.

Paramedics from several private ambulance services responded to the scene and treated the injured before transporting them to hospital.

The occupants of the BMW were not injured.

Cyclist injured in crash: Verulam

At approximately 12.15pm on Saturday 8 October members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to Buffels Drive in Verulam after receiving requests for medical assistance for an injured cyclist.

Upon arrival a 24-year-old man was found on the side of an unpaved road.

He had sustained severe injuries after his bicycle overturned while travelling downhill.

The cyclist was stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital.
