Vehicle burns after collision: King Shaka International

Two people were injured and their vehicle burnt following a collision on the R102 near the King Shaka International Airport intersection on Saturday 21 January.

At approximately 7.30am members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from passing motorists reporting the collision. Upon arrival it was established that a VW Polo GTi had collided into the back of a truck. The vehicle then spun out of control before bursting into flames.

The eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services arrived on scene and extinguished the fire, however, the vehicle was completely destroyed. The driver and passenger of the VW Polo sustained moderate injuries and were treated on scene before being transported to hospital.

The occupants of the truck were not injured.

House break-in suspect arrested: Verulam

At approximately 9am on 25 January members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to a home on Palm Street in Verulam after receiving reports of a house break-in in progress.

Upon arrival at the residence officers found a window leading into one of the bedrooms broken and the burglar bars bent.

Officers entered the home through the window and apprehended an Indian man inside the house.

The suspect was in the process of smoking heroin when he was arrested.

It was established that the residence belonged to the suspect’s mother. Due to him being a drug user and habitual thief he was no longer allowed to live in the family home. He had broken into the home on previous occasions and had stolen valuables to support his drug habit.

The suspect has been arrested on previous occasions by Reaction Unit officers for crimes relating to theft and drug use.

Brake failure results in taxi collision: Verulam -

Two people were injured following a collision on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD on the afternoon of 26 January.

At approximately 4.30pm members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from members of the public reporting the collision.

Upon arrival a Toyota HiAce taxi was found to have collided into a stationary Mercedes- Benz Atego truck. The driver and conductor of the taxi suffered moderate injuries and were treated on scene before being transported to hospital.

It is alleged that the taxi was travelling down Wick Street when its brakes failed.

In an attempt to stop the vehicle the driver turned up Court Lane however collided head on into the stationary truck. The taxi then rolled back down the road before coming to a stop.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the collision.

House robbery: Hazelmere, Verulam

At approximately 10.20am on Monday members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to a home in Hazelmere, Verulam after receiving reports of a house robbery that had occurred.

Upon arrival at the scene, approximately 1.5km from the Hazelmere Dam, it was established that five armed suspects had jumped over the driveway gate and tampered with the electronic gate motor before allowing their accomplices to drive onto the property.

The suspects then robbed the family of five for a Plasma TV and rifle safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing in an awaiting white Toyota Corolla and a black unknown vehicle.

No one was injured during the robbery.
