THE Verulam SAPS Crime Prevention Unit were involved in a gun battle with robbers in Zwelisha.

Verulam SAPS communications officer Lieutenant Mark Prakasim said police were responding to a business robbery on Sunday morning at a shop there and upon arrival they found eight heavily armed men.

"They had two men keeping watch at the door like scouts while the others were on the inside," said Prakasim.

"When they saw the police they began shooting and hit the police vehicle twice."

Prakasim said police then returned fire and during a fierce gun battle the suspects fled towards the shacks.

"Police gave chase and searched for the suspects, but were unable to make an arrest," said Prakasim.

No officers were injured in the gun battle, but the two occupants of the shop were shot on their hands.

"We are investigating a case of business robbery and are appealing to anyone with information to contact us urgently," said Prakasim.

He urged businesses to be vigilant especially late at night and in the early morning as several small shops have been robbed recently.
