ASEXUAL Health Awareness Day was held at the Netcare Hospital in Ballito recently to promote sexual health education in communities.

Experts in their fields gave talks on sexual health, menopause and andropause.

The event was co-ordinated by Trish Idensohn, owner of Stork’s Nest Mother and Baby Wellness Clinic at Netcare and Netcare marketing officer at Alberlito Hospital José Nadesan as a community outreach programme, in partnership with Pfizer.

Idensohn said that sexual health awareness begins at home hence the idea of the event was to equip parents with the correct facts to educate the community.

It was also aimed at showing parents how to teach children regarding sex education and ensuring that children are given the right message.

“If we educate them incorrectly and with the wrong message it can create sexual problems,” said Idensohn.

Although the programme has been running for three years, this was the first year that andropause was introduced after requests from men who attended last year’s event with their partners.

Urologist, Dr Eneshra Padayachee explained that andropause occurs when a man has a low level of testosterone.

“When some men reach the age of 45, they may experience certain bodily changes, very similar to menopause, as experienced by women.
“The activities that some men can easily deal with can suddenly become difficult for them,” said Padayachee.

“People need to have a good and healthy sex life and it definitely promotes health and well being because of endorphins,” said Idensohn.
“This also promotes a general sense of well being.”

Gynaecologist and obstetrician, Dr SP Moodley said age should never be a barrier to sexuality.

“Menopause or change of life ushers in hormonal changes that can negatively impact on sexuality. These hormonal changes can be easily corrected,” said Moodley.
“Sexuality is a fundamental human right.
“Intervention is warranted if it causes personal or couple distress.
“Your health-care provider must have a non-judgmental approach and be prepared to engage sexual health issues.”

Moodley said these public educational platforms empower patients with knowledge, thus ensuring holistic care.
