State of the nation? You must be joking

2016-02-18 06:00

I HAVE never been a fan of parliamentary proceedings and one would have to pay me a two months’ salary if you wanted me to watch it.

It has been a topic of discussion at my work place recently, with #Zumamust fall and Guptagate sagas so when staffers where chatting about the State of the Nation address I decided to give it a go, and I have never witnessed such good television in my life. Seriously, why pay close to R400 for a ticket to watch a famous comedian when you can have more laughs watching the South African government in action.

Now don’t get me wrong - this is not a feel-good letter. I am damn embarrassed and can’t believe those clowns I watched last Thursday are the people who represent us in government.

A few weeks ago I read a letter in the Coastal Weekly about using your power and exercising your right to vote.

I couldn’t agree with this more, but as local elections loom I have asked myself who would I, or, could I vote for.

I loved Nelson Mandela, and no cliches intended because he was truly a great leader. Even Thabo Mbeki was not that bad.

Kgalema Motlante - no comment. Helen Zille and her cronies have never really appealed to me. At some point I thought there could be hope for Cope, but I take that back. I am not even going to mention the leader of that red-beret party as that is a waste of time.

And then there is Jacob Zuma.

As an educated South African who belongs to the lower middle class, I have no options.

There really is no one I can put my mark next to. In other words, I have no faith in the potential leaders of this country.

I challenge anyone to let me know if there is such a person or party that is worth the wait in the queue to vote. I am running out of options.
