Thugs target ATM users

2016-12-22 06:01

A STERN warning is being sent to the members of the community to be on high alert when being approached by strange people at local ATMs

According to the Tongaat SAPS suspects are targeting unsuspecting residents withdrawing money from the ATMs in the CBD and are promising to double their cash.

Warrant Officer Ricky Moodley said that the victims are being approached at the ATMs by the a group of men posing as bank clients.

Moodley said rural dwellers coming to withdraw money in the Tongaat CBD are the soft target for these criminals. “The suspects targets the senior citizens and residents coming from rural areas who have no knowledge about ATM scams.”

Moodley said the suspects lure the victims into giving them cash with a promise to double it.

“The suspect then hands over a sealed envelope and convinces the victim not to open it for a few minutes. When the victim opens the envelope later, they find used lottery tickets. By the time the victims realise they were scammed, the suspect is long gone. So far three cases have been reported at the police station and the police are working around the clock to bring the suspects to book.

“No arrests have been made at this stage, but we are appealing to residents who may have information to come forward. The police will increase patrols in the CBD to ensure that the community is safe.”
