SHOTOKAN Karate International South Africa (SKISA) held its glittering and glamorous Awards Dinner Banquet on Sunday, 1 May, held at the Durban University of Technology Campus Hall.

Among the recipients of the Commendation Awards was Tonver president Guru Ramcharan for providing yeomen service in various facets of sport and community affairs.

In his capacity as Tonver president, Ramcharan has, over the past 11 years, provided support to local school sports in the Tongaat and Verulam areas.

As part of its social responsibility programme, SKISA has closely followed work of Ramcharan and unanimously agreed to honour his service to the organisation and support of school sports.

‘Hanshi’ Sonny Pillay, president and founder of SKISA and president of Karate South Africa (KSA) said Ramcharan plays a key role in mediating the challenges faced by children today.

“Drugs are real in our society and sport has played a pivotal role in keeping all our children occupied in healthy-living lifestyles and away from those vices that only bring doom and gloom in their lives,” said Pillay.

“It is the work of teachers and organisations like Tonver that lead the way in providing opportunities to our learners in achieving their potential as sports and learning compliment each other,” he added.

Ramcharan is no newcomer to sports. In addition to heading the most powerful school sports council in the country, he is involved in all areas of sport to provide holistic development to children.

He also is a founder member of the Friendship Games, an annual athletics meet between Tonver, Phoessa and Cumberwood.

He has managed the KZN U13 Invitation team for 18 years and most recently managed the KZN U13 A team which has participated in the Cricket South Africa Week for the past three years.

A sportsman himself, Ramcharan has also played and coached soccer, volleyball, cricket and athletics for a number of years. In addition to this, hHe has also worked as a volunteer in all cricket and soccer World Cups played in Durban. Above all, however, he said he is a school principal.

Ramcharan said he is honoured to have received recognition for his service to school sport.

“I am indeed overwhelmed by this accolade honouring Tonver and myself as president. This award is accepted on behalf of the hardworking, committed and energetic Tonver executive, code convenors, the Council and all the teachers at schools who coach and manage the pupils. These are the true foot soldiers of school sports who make Tonver roar on the sports field,” said Ramcharan.
