THE curtains came down in Verulam Athletic Club’s (Vac) 15th anniversary banquet this weekend with glitter, pomp and dazzling array of team Vac membership, families and friends showcasing performances and awards.

The event commenced with the recognition­ award for the late Sykes Perumal and the cutting of the 15th anniversary cake by founding members Krish Naidoo, Anand Naicker and Anand Naidoo.

Chairman Bobby Ramlagan and Sundree Ramlagan scored a second Vac memorable double in taking the prestigious husband and wife duo male and female Sportsperson of the Year award, with Sundree following on from 2015. Sundree Ramlagan scored another a unique double with the female walker of the year award as well. In a pleasant surprise, Ronnie Rangasamy walked away with the Male Walkers award in his first full season with Verulam Athletic club.

Runners of the year saw Anita Sewnarain make a remarkable comeback after a serious injury and taking the Female Runner of the Year for the third successive season as well as first female Comrades runner home.

In a change in 2016, Walter Mthembu eased through both as first novice, first Comrades Male runner and captured the coveted Male Runner of the Year award. Ndwedwe Matriculant Thabiso Gumede made history with another double in Junior Runner of the Year as well as Cross-Country Runner of the Year.

Vac veteran Vukani Maphumulo was all smiles with Senior Cross country Runner of the Year as well as accorded as special award for representing KZN at South African Cross-Country Championships in George this year.

In an attempt to ensure maximum credit, all memberships were given mileage awards, coupled with Comrades and Challenge Awards.

The Comrades Awards was led by Vac record holder Krish Naidoo, who has completed his 24th Comrades Marathon, while Walter Mthembu secured his novice medal and first Vac finisher.

Anita Sewnarain led the female in Comrades with back-to-back medals and Marlene Pillay and Strinin Nadesan securing a Comrades and Two Oceans double in one calendar year.

This year saw the introduction of the middle distance award for walkers and runners in the 30km challenge.

Verulam Athletic club left no stone unturned to ensure that all who contributed to the success of Team Vac this year did not go unnoticed.

Awards were given for members with highest mileage accumulated in the male and females runners and walkers categories and adverts in excess of R3 000.

Another initiative was the introduction of the 10-10 challenge designed for the membership to attempt either 10, 10km races or 10, 21.1km races. With Anand Naicker and Brenda Peters completing their successive 10th 10km challenge, Sundree Ramlagan scored another memorable double completing the 10km and 21.1km. Bobby Ramlagan, Dolly Shamlall, Tharushka Sookoo also completed the Vac 10 Challenge.

Vac also included the highest mileage category awards with the top three in male and female runners and walkers categories receiving awards from their accumulation of mileage over the season, that included not only running and walking, but also assisting in community events. Dolly Shamlall and Pravin Sewnarain led Team Vac in the runners category, whil Bobby and Sundree Ramlagan led Team Vac in the walkers category respectively, with Ameetha Singh, Brenda Peters, Anand Naicker, Ronnie Rangasamy, Anita Sewnarain, Tharushka Sookoo, Strini Nadesan and Anand Naidoo.

Vac extends its gratitude to all stakeholders, membership and families that have collectively contributed to an incredible year. This week sees the 2017 planning meeting taking place. Membership is invited to make input on club events and criteria package for consideration.

Day lee Time Trials continues on Saturday at 5am.

The Vac Mandela - 1 860 Indentured Labour 10km and five-kilometre race takes place next Thursday at 6.15pm. Registration will be taken at time trials as well as Asmalls.
