THE Verulam Athletic Club Comrades team dedicated the past weekend to winding up their preparation run with a taper of 20km and 15km runs in the Airport Challenge at the weekend.

Vukani Maphumulo led team VAC with a fast finishing 1.16 in the 15km run  pronouncing himself “ready” for his 8th Comrades medal after his sterling effort in his novice Two Oceans Ultra earlier last month.
Krish Naidoo, a double green Comrades finisher with over 20 Comrades medal finishes, is also poised for his Two Oceans and Comrades double with a fluent 2.15 finish.

Walter Mthembu, last year’s novice, also announced his readiness for  his “back to back” medal this year with a pleasant 1.34 in the 15km run.
Leading VAC female runner, Anita Sewn, who is going for her third consecutive Comrades medal, oozed with confidence with a 2.22 finish before setting off on the Comrades route tester.

Unassuming Simon Blose, who will be attempting his eight Comrades Marathon, finished in 2.18 and produced a steely smile and commented that he cannot wait for the “up run” start.
Alan Govender, who is shaking off an injury, was pleased with his effort after a 2.27 finish.

Pam Zwane led team VAC in the 10km ladies “bus” in an effortless 1.21 with Nokuthula Langa and Beena Maharaj. Birthday boy Hemraj Shamlall followed through with Anand Naicker and Jaya Kisten completing the 10km finishers.

Last week’s prize category winner Shirley Narainsamy led the 12km edition in 1.36 ahead of fast finishing Rajesh Ramdhularie in 1.42.
Dolly Shamlall and Ronnie Rangasamy eased through in 1.31, whilst Ben Padayachee, Joey Chetty and Dominic Govender enjoyed their early morning Airport 12km Challenge amid the banter.

Membership as well as those involved in the Gaterite Challenge in March this year are invited to a VAC double header this Saturday at 3pm at Mounthaven Primary. VAC invites the club membership and the Gaterite volunteers and officials for The Gaterite Appreciation Club Social coupled with the Comrades Pasta Function.
