THE Verulam Athletic Club ensured the weather did not deter the support for local club Woodview members in their Starling Challenge despite the conditions with runners running through streams of water alongside the roads.

Coupled with the Vac Mother’s Day breakfast provided to members and extended families, the day proved memorable for three podium finishes for Verulam Athletic Club members.

In a double Mother’s Day and birthday celebration, Anita Sewnarain posted first position in the ladies 40+ category prize with 2:10 and another Mother’s Day and first podium Vac finish, Shirley Narainsamy took the podium in the 10km 40+ category as well.

Ronnie Rangasamy also continued his rich form in the men’s walk with a podium finish.

Vukani Maphumulo wound up his Comrades Marathon training with a fast 1:23 finish in the 21.1km half marathon taking second 35+ category position and a top 10 finish overall ahead of another Comrades runner Thabiso Mohale, who posted a pleasing 1:27.

Pravin Sewnarain led Anita Sewnarain in 2:03 and 2:10 respectively, while Sundree Ramlagan eased through in a sub-three hour 2:58.

Velvan Nair and Ben Padayachee led team Vav in the 10km dash in a sub-one hour 57 minutes finish in the downpour ahead of Shirley Narainsamy, Rajesh Ramdhularie and Beena Maharaj in 1:20 with Busiswa Msomi finishing consecutive weekends 10km in 1:25.

Dolly Shamlall eased through in 1:32, a minute ahead of Brenda Peters in 1:33. Jaya Kisten rounded up team Vac in 1.56.

Verulam Athletic Club extends its appreciation to team Vac led by Dasen Naidoo and chairperson Bobby Ramlagan for the Mother’s Day breakfast at the race venue for participants.

Membership and the public are reminded that all time trials and airport runs now commence at 6am. Entry and participation is free. - Supplied.
