VERULAM Athletic Club (VAC) continued to up its ante in the pre-season with members taking to a weekend double in the Day Lee Challenge and Airport Challenge that provides a staggered approach depending on the various levels of fitness and training.

Saturday’s 4km and 8km continues to provide ample opportunities for an early morning speed run, while the Sunday’s Airport Challenge provides a change northbound for 5, 10 ,12, 15 and 22km.

Ricardo Nair and novice Neeshan Rajman led the 4km in consecutive weeks in 28 minutes ahead of Pam Mtshali in 32 minutes. Anand Naicker and Dawood Bayat completed the 4km walk in 42 minutes.

Mantombi Fire and Udeshan Phillip found the extra at the finish with a well deserved sub 1 hour 58 minutes in the 8km run. Novice Nokuthula Langa lposted a credible 1.11, whilst Zama Ngobese secured a double with a well run 1.16 in the 8km Saturday run.

In the Airport Run, 2017 Comrades novice Thabiso Mohale led team VAC in the 22km in a sub two hour 1.44 ahead of veteran Vukani Maphumulo 1.49. Siyanda Makhanya chased the duo and finished in a credible 1.53. Walter Mthembu eased off in 2.06.

The 15km edition has seen improved performances with Ntombi Fire leading the pack in 1.36 ahead of regular Velvan Nair and Anand Naidoo a minute later.

Anita Sewnarain unwound a consistent pace to finish in 1.40 with running partner Andrew Dlamini a minute later in 1.41.

Raessa Bayat continued her fitness in a pleasing 2.00 followed closely by walker Ronnie Rangasamy three minutes off pace. Tharushka Sookoo and Pravin SEwnarain finished together , whilst Rajesh Ramdhularie and Sundree Ramlagan , switching to running in 2017 completed in a credible 2.16.

Club middle distances veterans Beena Maharaj and Shirley Narainsamy led the 12km edition with consistent performances on both Saturday and Sunday in 1.36 ahead of walker Smiley Naidoo in 1.40.

Newcomers in VAC colours this season Silindile Gwamanda, Khanysile Mthembu and Ntombifuthi Zungu eased through in 1.54 ahead of Dawood Bayat , recovering from injury in 1.55.

Rita Mohanpersad and Sharon Sukkan made a welcome return in 1.56, with walker Bobby Ramlagan easing through a minute later.

Premilla Harripersadh also scored a consecutive weekend double in a fast finishing 2.14 ahead of junior sensation, 14 year Beautiful Msomi in 2.16. Dominic Govender and Vishnu Moodley completed the 12km finishers in 2.23.

Pam Mtshali led the 10km run in 1.10 showing glimpses of early form, with another new member Zama Ngobese posting consecutive weekend double in 1.15. Shavir Karanjoo finished a minute.

Busiswa Msomi finished her treble 10km runs in three consecutive weeks in an improved 1.46, also joining the 2017 novice group.

Making a return after a year, Judy Rajoo easily got into her stride with walking comrade Queenie Naidoo in 1.52 while Anand Naicker and Feroza Luckan eased through in 1.53.

Juanita Deenanath and Ameetha Singh completed their 5km in 1.09.

Members are reminded that 2017 licences and registration will be available from this weekend onwards. From 1 February only KZN 2017 licences will be applicable for KZN races and members are reminded to apply timeously for this.

Verulam Athletic club remains one of the cheapest clubs on the North Coast. The public is also urged to join VAC every Saturday (4km, 8km) and Sunday (5km, 10km, 12km and 15km) without obligation for a free run or walk at Gaterite Centre at 5am.
