VERULAM Athletic Club embarked on the triple challenge this weekend with a team attempting one for the bucket list to do events - the Sani Stagger - and the weekend’s Day lee and Airport Challenge.

The Sani Stagger - connecting two countries Lesotho and South Africa - was run on gravel and the steep ascent combined with the sharp descents, breathtaking landscape of the Drakensberg all made an incredible experience with Bharushen Ramlagan leading in 3.03 ahead of Sundree Ramlagan in 3.12.

Tharushka Sookoo and mom Pam Sookoo finished in 3.23 and 3.33 respectively. Renuka and Jason Moodley succumbed to injury 4km before finish line.

However, the Moodley duo said: “The incredible experience will remain forever etched in our minds.”

Locally the Day lee Challenge and Airport Challenge was run in cold and runner-friendly weather.

Anand Naicker and Brenda completed the 4km in 46 minutes, while Pravin Sewnarain, played a mentoring role for novices in VAC colours – Menzi Mkhumbuzi and Paul Mthembu embarking on their first Comrades for 2017 in 52 and 55 minutes respectively.

Regulars Beena Maharaj, Shirley Narainsamy Ronnie Rangasamy and Dominic Govender all posted season end times.

The Sunday’s Airport Run saw Pravin Sewnarain, Alan Govender, Anita Sewnarain, Menzi Mkhumbuzi, Paul Mthembu, Krish Naidoo and Strini Nadesan all embarking in a long run in preparation for the Two Oceans and Comrades qualifiers for 2017.

The base training helps in providing the platform and springboard for the up run next year,l said team VAC’s coaching staff.

Andrew Dlamini, another Comrades runner, posted a 1.50 finish ahead of Raeesa Bayat in the 15km edition.

Dawood Bayat completed the 12km in 1.56 ahead of Velvan Nair, Dominic Govender, Smiley Naidoo and Queenie Naidoo in 2.17 respectively.

Dolly Shamlall continued her consistent run in the 15km run in 2.09 ahead of Ronnie Rangasamy in 2.17.

Krish Naidoo and Strini Nadesan came in 2.28 in the 22 extended run.
