THE historical steel bridge in Verulam which has been closed for several months due to renovations has been reopened.

The reopening of the bridge is expected to alleviate traffic congestion at the R102 robots by Verulam in the mornings and evenings.

Ward councillor Choks Arunajallam said the work which had to be done to restore the bridge following vandalism has been completed.

More work is still to be done on the bridge however as the surface of the bridge is still to be tarred again.

“There were potholes on the bridge but these have been filled and the bridge has been opened, especially ahead of the festive period to help traffic flow,” said Arunajallam. “I have done an inspection of the bridge and everything is in order. The bridge is safe for use by the public.”

Arunajallam explained the lengthy delay was caused by vandalism of the bridge which prolonged renovations of the structure.

Arunajallam urged the community to report any suspicious activity to ensure the bridge is not vandalised again.

Verulam SAPS communication officer, Mark Prakasim confirmed the vandalism which led to the bridge closure.

“We are monitoring all scrap yards to ensure that these issues do not arise again,” said Prakasim.

“Any scrap yard found to be buying stolen materials will be charged.”

To report suspicious activity contact the Verulam Saps on 0325415222 or contact councillor Choks Arunajallam on 0823021925.
