WINNING LETTERWherefore art thou Madiba

2016-03-17 06:00

NELSON Mandela said: “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.

“I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

I have come to accept that South Africa might never be so lucky to have a leader like Madiba.

If only current leadership could just apply some of his logic, even if it is a little bit, to ruling this country, maybe, just maybe, we could make a difference.

In the grand scheme of things I am nobody, but I love to write and form part of the blogging world - it is for this reason that I have kept my identity a ‘secret.’

Human Rights Day is dedicated to non-racism and I think that it is much needed. For some odd reason South Africans seems to be “showing their true colours” during these tough times. I very rarely have political views, but I have to use a quote from my favourite series (The Fixer) - “the fish rots from the head”.

Are South Africans taking their cue from the leader - he clearly has blatant disregard for rules and other people. So clearly we are quite open with our remarks.

The reason for this rant is simple. I am a brown-skinned person whose best friend is a white guy.

I went to one of those integrated schools where we very rarely focused on colour. But I digress.

He recently got called for an interview at a well-known Durban company.

After earning minimum wage for waitering and completing his university degree, he finally got an offer. The dude loves the ocean, so he never thought of leaving Durban.

When he arrives at the interview, he goes through the motions and says he felt pretty confident as the position was a junior one.

At the end, the HR manager tells him that she is sorry, but they have to meet employment equity and are not able to employ white males.

Now, in my opinion, this is racism.

And now I will end with another Nelson Mandela quote:

“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world.”
