Woman abducted and raped

2016-08-11 06:00

IN a month that honours contribution made by women in South Africa, a Tongaat woman was abducted and raped at gunpoint last week.

According to police it is believed that her boyfriend (24) was angry when the victim ended their relationship.

The accused has apparently abducted her from her home and forced her to go with him.

A family member, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, told Coastal Weekly that the victim is struggling to cope and they preferred not to comment in order to protect her.

Tongaat SAPS spokeswoman Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said: “She tried in numerous occasions to end their relationship, but the suspect would go to her workplace and threaten her. He held her at gunpoint in her flat and threatened to shoot her and himself.”

Maharaj-Marie said the suspect punched the victim’s face and forced her to go with him to his house where he raped her.

The Tongaat SAPS were alerted about the incident.

“The victim convinced the suspect to take her home. The police were then dispatched to the victim’s house and the suspect was arrested after a chase.

“He was found in possession of unlicenced firearm and ammunition,” she said.

The suspect appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s court on 8 August and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 16 August.
