Woman abducted, raped in Tongaat

2017-04-20 06:01

A WOMAN, abducted from the Tongaat CBD and raped by an unknown suspect on April 10, has opened a case at the police station.

Police spokesperson in Tongaat Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said the victim was approached in the CBD by an unknown man in maroon vehicle who forced her to get in.

“The suspect demanded she get in or he would kill her. When she got into the car, the suspect took her to the bush where he raped her.”

However, the victim managed to escape and got a lift to Umdloti.

Maharaj-Marie warned women to be extra vigilant.

“The victim left her cellphones and cash in the suspect’s car. Police are investigating case of rape and kidnapping.”

Ward councillor Dolly Munien condemned sexual crimes against women and children.

“At our recent war-room meeting it emerged that a six-year-old child was raped at Gwala’s Farm. It’s shocking to find out that these barbaric acts still rear its ugly head in our community. Rape victims needs to come forward and report cases to the police.”

Munien said there are educational programmes that assist rape victims.

“We will be hosting a workshop where we will be discussing all matters pertaining to sexual violence. We also intend to visit schools and educate pupils about their rights.”
