Beware of WhatsApp and e-wallet scam

2015-05-01 06:00

SEVERAL people have been scammed via WhatsApp by an unknown person hacking into their friend’s or relative’s account.

Nombuso Ndzimande from Mthwalume said she was scammed last week after receiving a WhatsApp message from her friend asking her to lend her money.

Nzimande said after receiving the message she sent her friend the money via e-wallet to a number she has never seen before.

“I received a message while I was at work from my friend asking me to send her R1 300.

“I received a second message with a number to which I should send the money [via e-wallet] which was different to the number my friend uses for WhatsApp.” Nzimande said she never questioned why the numbers were different as many people have different numbers for their WhatsApp profiles. “I called my friend and asked if she had received the money and asked her why she was not using her usual number for WhatsApp.

“She then said she doesn’t know what I am talking about, saying she had been having problems with her account. That’s when I realised that I had been scammed.” Nzimande said the friend told her she received a code from WhatsApp and was asked to send the code back to that number because it was sent to her by mistake. Nzimande reported this to the Hibberdene police and was told that the scam is known and ongoing. After reporting the incident she went to the bank to investigate where the money was withdrawn. “When I told the bank I had been scammed they traced the transaction and it showed that the scammers withdrew the money in Mpumalanga Province.

“If anyone receives a code from an unknown number on WhatsApp they should delete it and not respond because that is how scammers hack into your account,” she said

She advised the public to take note of the number - 072 995 0163 - the scammers use for e-wallet transactions
