THE Harry Gwala ANC regional chairperson and district mayor Mluleki Ndobe, visited Kokstad on Monday to sort out challenges facing the Greater Kokstad Municipality.

Ndobe led a delegation of the party’s top regional committee members.

It has been said it was a high profile visit that could see heads roll.

“As the district mayor of Harry Gwala, I want to take this opportunity and appeal for calm and stability in Kokstad. We are aware of the challenges facing communities. We are also more than willing and committed to engage with stakeholders, including Kokstad Chamber of Commerce and concerned residents.”

The regional structure visited after many demonstrations by opposition parties and concerned residents complaining about the municipality.

“We are very concerned about the disrupting conduct of some sectors of the community which is disadvantaging disciplined citizens and stakeholders.”

Ndobe appealed for stability and patience, saying that people must listen one another and engage in a productive manner.

“In the best interests of our communities in Greater Kokstad Municipality and disciplined stakeholders we must find a better way of raising issues and engaging among ourselves. Political grandstanding and opportunism won’t help anyone. I am still optimistic that we can find more reasonable ways of debating issues concerning our communities in a peaceful manner.”

He said they differ on the approach of tackling various challenges, but this doesn’t necessarily mean there is a lack of commitment to resolve issues.

“Drawing from our experiences of the past, negotiation and meaningful dialogue are the solutions to our challenges.

“The ANC, as the ruling party in all our municipalities in the region, has intervened with the view of restoring stability and focus on expediting the service delivery needs of our people,” he said.

In the meeting he said they requested that all parties involved must adhere to this.

“We must put the needs of our communities first and be driven by a desire of strengthening the minority in this municipality so that we realise progress for the betterment of the lives of all our people.”

AS THE DISTRICT MAYOR OF HARRY GWALA, I WANT TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY AND APPEAL FOR CALM AND STABILITY IN KOKSTAD. WE ARE AWARE OF THE CHALLENGES FACING COMMUNITIES
