THE shack that Unathi Silinga (not her real name) was renting in Bhongweni township in Kokstad was totally destroyed by fire on Wednesday night.

Unathi, who works at a hair salon in town, couldn’t contain her grief when she saw what was left.

“I am left with only the clothes I am wearing. All my belongings, furniture and clothes are now ash. I don’t know where to start. I am devastated.”

Neighbours rushed with buckets of water to put the fire out as soon as they saw the flames and smoke.

She said she is not sure what caused the fire.

“When I left for work there was no electricity and I notice that whenever the power comes back on it is very strong. It either burns the light bulb or something else so I think it was something to do with electricity surge that caused this.”

GKM spokesperson Sabelo Ncwane said Ward 8 councillor Monde Nondabula, who Silinga falls under, is aware of the incident.

“The councillor knows what happened and the municipality will take action once our disaster management department has made an assessment on the extent of the damage. We also extend our sympathy as the municipality to the people affected by this unfortunate incident,” Ncwane said
