Alleged Underberg farm attackers arrested

2017-02-24 06:00

THE KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended SAPS members who were involved in tracing the suspects that are allegedly linked to the recent Underberg farm attacks.

Last Friday police arrested three suspects allegedly involved with the attacks in the Bulwer area. The suspects were found in possession of stolen property that was taken from the home of a 79-year-old farmer who was attacked in Underberg.

On February 1, Gavin Carter (46), was asleep at his West Isley farm home in Underberg when he was attacked. He was shot several times and died instantly.

Another farmer Trevor Charls Rees (79) was attacked and killed. He was at his Pudsay farm, in Himeville on 3 February when he was approached by the suspects.

It is alleged that the suspects tied him up, assaulted him, shot him and then took off Ford Ranger bakkie and money. He died on 4 February. His vehicle was found abandoned in Pietermaritzburg area.

“Through hard work by Himeville police officers, assisted by local farmers and security companies, a breakthrough was made when the suspects were arrested in the Bulwer area. The suspects are linked to both farm attacks and investigations are continuing,” said SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane.

The suspects appeared in court on Monday and the case was postponed to next Monday.
