UMZIMKHULU is mourning the death of a PR councillor, Mduduzi Tshibase after he was shot dead while entering his home in Gugwini village outside Umzimkhulu.

His death was confirmed by Umzimkhulu Municipality Mayor, Mphuthumi Mpabanga, who said the murder of community leaders is becoming common in the area.

Tshibase was an ANC member in Ward 14 when he was elected PR councillor in Umzimkhulu Municipality after last year’s local elections.

On 30 April, Umzimkhulu Municipality speaker, Khaya Thobela was laid to rest after he was gunned down in his rural home of Mfundweni village in the area.
A suspect linked to Thobela’s murder was arrested and is to appear in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court on 12 June.
Ward 12 former councillor, Khayalethu Mgcwaba was buried last Saturday after he was shot and killed in Machunwini village in Umzimkhulu.

Two suspects and Mgcwaba’s wife appeared in court for this week for Mgcwaba’s murder, but at the time of going to press the court outcome was unavailable.

“People of Umzimkhulu are now scared after the murders of our community leaders,” said Mpabanga.

The ANC is preparing to host Harry Gwala regional congress on 3 and 4 June, however, regional chairperson Zamo Nxumalo said it is not possible to link Tshibase’s death with the upcoming conference.

SAPS spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident and said Tshibase sustained four shots to his chest. Five cartridges were found at the scene.
The case is being investigated by the provincial organised task team and no arrests have been made yet. Secretary of the ANCYL in Harry Gwala, Qiniso Ntozakhe said it is painful to lose party members.
