Bicycles donated to youth initiative

2016-10-28 06:00

A GROUP of 80 young Kokstad people received bicycles, valued at R22 400, from the KZN MEC for Human Settlements, Ravi Pillay recently.
The group is working under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), which was initiated by government to assist unemployed young people.

In Kokstad programme members care for the environment by cleaning the town and planting crops and in each ward there are 10 members of the group.

Pillay encouraged members of the group to set good examples for young people.

“I am glad to see the young people of Kokstad working and improving their town. These bicycles should be protected by their owners to ensure that no one sells or steals them.”

Each bicycle came with a helmet and tool box. Recently members of the programme received an award from the provincial Department of Human Settlements for caring for the environment.

Gugulethu Ngejane, the member of the programme said their aim is to produce crops to donate to charity and poor families.

“I am thankful for these bicycles, which will make it easier for us when we go to work, and of course, they will keep us fit.”

At the handover Pillay, GKM deputy mayor, Karen Walker and speaker Zolani Mhlongo tested them out.
