A NUMBER of Kokstad residents have responded positively to a call by the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) for blood donations during the festive period.
Eeché Jansen was one of the people who donated blood at St Patrick’s Church on Monday.

Jansen told the Fever that donating blood means saving many lives.
“I am donating blood for a good purpose because some people will need my blood. I don’t want others to suffer when I can help.”

The donor clinic at the church was opened from 12.30pm to 6pm.
Rinton Pillay, a nurse from SANBS said the people of Kokstad responded well to the campaign.
“When we came here we were expecting about 110 people but we received far more. December is a critical time where blood is needed mostly,” said Pillay.

Any person who wants to donate blood should weigh at least 50kg, be between the ages of 16 and 65 years and must be good health. They also need to practice safe sex.
Blood can be used for treatment of anaemia and bleeding after trauma or surgery.

During festive season and Easter holidays, donor blood is in high demand because of a spike in road accidents.

The campaign then moved to Cedarville and Matatiele on Tuesday.
