FORMER winner of the women’s title in The Witness Maritzburg City Marathon, Candyce Hall, will be on the starting line when the event takes place over the weekend of February 27-28 this year.

Although she lives in Cape Town, she has very close ties to the event.

Her parents are John and Eileen Hall, the organisers of The Witness Maritzburg City Marathon. Together they have turned it into an event that has been recognised as the best organised marathon in the country by surveys in Runners’ World, Modern Athlete and Cottrell’s Nedbank Runners’ Guide.

“I am proud of my parents. I am so glad it has worked out for them because they really do give their all for the Maritzburg Marathon. My dad’s other work is an extra. I am so glad that he is able to do it as a career now. It took him 60 years to get there!” she laughed.

Hall is the chairperson of the Carbineers Running Club in Cape Town, which is affiliated to Carbineers in Pietermaritzburg, the host club of the Maritzburg City Marathon.

She claims to not take her running that seriously, but she placed 45th in the Two Oceans Marathon last year and 193rd in the Comrades Marathon, and those were just two of a very full list of events she participated in.

Her results in marathons in 2015 included wins in the Redhill and Weskus marathons, second place in the Mauritius and Cango marathons, third in the Prison to Prison Marathon and fifth place in the Peninsula Marathon.

Hall also recorded five wins over the half-marathon distance and 12 top three finishes in 21,1 km races in total. She won three times over the 15 km distance and once over 16 kilometres. She placed third in the 10 000 metres at the Western Province Championships.

Back in 2004, she was the youngest finisher in the Comrades Marathon up-run. The following year she won The Witness Maritzburg Marathon. “It feels about a thousand years ago,” she joked.

Hall said has been struggling with injuries for the past four or five months, so said she might not be able to take the competitive side of The Witness Maritzburg City Marathon too seriously.

“I will just see how it goes on the day,” she reckoned.
