Career expo for pupils next week

2017-05-19 06:00

NEXT Wednesday, more than 2 000 pupils from schools around Umzimkhulu will attend the Umzimkhulu Career and Skills Development Expo at Mkhatshana Junior Secondary at Nongidi village.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Elizabeth Thabethe is to attend.

The expo will run from May 17 to 19.

Co-ordinator, Philani Dlamini said pupils in Umzimkhulu need to be educated about career opportunities so they don’t struggle when they go to tertiary institutions.

Last year the expo was attended by 25 schools and some pupils at the event chose teaching, nursing and social work at tertiary level.
Dlamini said there are many opportunities like aviation, marine, mining, property industry and media that can be followed.

“On May 17, pupils will be motivated by speakers including successful people, lawyers, doctors, local business people and teachers. I want young people to believe in themselves,” he said.

Umzimkhulu produced top matric achievers in Harry Gwala District last year, but said he wants underperforming schools to do better this year.

“Tertiary institutions like Durban University of Technology, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Esayidi Technical and Vocational, Educational and Technical College teachers and students, government departments and state owned and private companies will attend,” said Dlamini.

Unemployed young people will be trained how to compile a curriculum vitae they need when applying for jobs.
