Churchgoers killed by lightning

THREE female churchgoers were killed on Saturday and 38 injured when a bolt of lightning struck a tree in an open field in kwaMachi, near Harding.

“The deceased are members of the Shembe Nazareth Baptist Church who are known for worshipping under trees,” said KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie.

The women, aged between 50 and 65, died as the church leader was about to close the service.

The surviving members, who sustained minor injuries, were taken to nearby hospitals.

They are in a stable condition, complaining mostly of pain in their hands and feet, Mckenzie said.

Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube cautioned people about using trees as a cover in cloudy conditions. She sent condolences to the families of the three deceased. - News24.
• Umuziwabantu Municipality communications officer Nkosikhona Zwane said their disaster management team received a call from emergency services in Port Shepstone, reporting that an incident had occurred at KwaMachi. She said that another 70 members of the church were rushed to local hospital for treatment

“On receiving the call the team visited the scene and the homes of the three members that had died,” said Zwane.

On Monday Mayor Dixie Nciki, Umuziwabantu disaster management team and Councillor Sokiwe Vethe visited the families to hand out food parcels and blankets to the families of the deceased members.
