A COMMUNITY clean-up operation that was supposed to take place in Bhongweni Township was cancelled because Greater Kokstad Municipality failed to bring tools and trucks to assist the initiative.

On Tuesday 50 community members waited for almost two hours on the corner of Mbambo and July streets in Bongweni to clean the
area.

The community and Ward 8 councillor Lwanda Madikizela dispersed and told Fever they will plan another date for the clean-up.

Bawinile Tambo said the area is filthy because people throw everything on the ground.
“The area is getting worse so the community decided to take action instead of waiting for the municipality to help,” said Tambo.

Daliwonga Mathambo said: “We need containers that people can use to dump their rubbish in instead of dumping just anywhere. The municipality must also put up warning signs about illegal dumping in the area.”

People also blame the municipality for not collecting rubbish every day. Sinekhaya Kula said the municipality must enforce dumping by-laws in Kokstad.

“People must realise that dumping is not good and that dumping just anywhere is unacceptable. They must keep their areas clean,” said Madikizela.
Greater Kokstad Municipality spokesperson Sabelo Ncwane apologised to people and said the clean-up initiative came from the back-to-basics programme.

“We introduced this campaign as a temporary measure in response to the back-to-basics challenges. We assigned a junior employee to co-ordinate the campaign because there is no senior manager to look into it.”
