ABOUT 200 young people who are cleaning streets around Kokstad, closed Greater Kokstad Municipality office entrance for more than two hours demanding payment on Wednesday.
They were hired by the municipality under a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) leanership programme for skills development.

They signed contracts in July and started working last month. The protesters said on 30 November they did not receive their monthly stipend of R1 500 as promised and were told to wait for the end of December.

“We were then told that we are not going to receive payments until 25 January next year. The municipality only provides us transport to go to work, but to return back home we have to walk,” said one of them who asked to remain anonymous.

A municipal employee meeting that was underway inside the municipality was disrupted when the group started chanting.

GKM youth manager, Khaya Xorile tried to calm the situation and pleaded with them to return to work, saying the payments will be made to their bank accounts by next Tuesday.
