Community meeting disrupted

2016-09-16 06:00

A MEETING held to introduce the new ward councillors and discuss service delivery issues last Thursday at JJ Mhlongo Hall in Horseshow had to be abandoned because of angry community members.
Members chanted revolutionary songs and threw chairs indicating their dissatisfaction with the new Ward 1 councillor, Nonyamezelo Lusawana, saying they will not work with her because she never won in the elections.
The meeting was attended by the Greater Kokstad Municipality speaker Zolani Mhlongo, some of the new councillors and Lusawana.

SAPS and municipal police were called to the scene, but the meeting had to be stopped.

Mhlongo left the hall under police escort.

A community member, who wished to remain anonymous, said the majority of people want Athi Motseki to be their councillor. Motseki was an independent candidate in the elections.

Lusawana denied that the majority of people are against her and said it’s only a small group.

“I was voted for by the community of Horseshoe and I want peace in the area. It was my first meeting with the community and I am going to have many meetings with them.”

ANC sub-branch secretary Phumzile Nocanda commended the community of Horseshoe for voting for her.

“She [Lusawana] is a community member at Horseshoe and many people believe she is going to change their life.”
