Community members threaten to not vote

2016-06-17 06:00

COMMUNITY members of Harding threatened not to vote during elections if Umziwabantu Local Municipality does not respond to the memorandum delivered two weeks ago.

Corruption, nepotism and interference of municipal officials during election of ward candidates were listed on the memorandum.

A community member who is also an ANC member, Nikwe Jomboni, said the municipality is wrong for no t answering their memorandum.
“If the municipality chooses not to responding to our memo, people will not participate in the elections,” said Jomboni.

Earlier this month Fever published a story of ANC and community members who marched to municipal offices in Harding demanding municipal Mayor Dixie Nciki and municipal councillors to be probed and step down due to allegations of nepotism and corruption.

Protestors accused Nciki of illegally benefiting from funds that were meant for a conference that was held at Ugu District recently.

“If the municipality is ignoring our petition, we are not going to close schools or destroy government property as a sign of frustration as other people do in the country. We are peaceful here in Harding,” said Jomboni.

Municipality speaker of the council Dumile Ngubo said the municipality is not ignoring its people. He said the municipal leadership is going to respond anytime soon.

“The municipality has requested organisers of the march to clarify some of things that are not clear in the memorandum.”

“If the municipality is ignoring our petition, we are not going to close schools or destroy government property as a sign of frustration as other people do in the country. We are peaceful here in Harding,” said Jomboni.
