THE Department of Correctional Services in Kokstad took up social issues, including alcohol and drug abuse, the death of officials and the KZN drought at a prayer day at the Kokstad town hall last Thursday.

Religious leaders, government officials and councillors attended the event which seeks divine intervention for challenges plaguing society and Correctional Services.

Senior manager at Correctional Services, Nad Nayager said the prayer is an important date on the department's calendar.

“We hold prayer's every year because we face a lot of challenges in our line of work.

“We engage in very risky operations which sometimes put our lives in danger. So we pray for protection from God and we also pray that there aren't any security breaches in our prisons.

“We know we are faced with a serious drought and we are faced high level of alcohol and drug abuse so those are some of our prayer points as we need supernatural intervention in these issue.”

He said many officials, from the department and police officers, have lost their lives.

Delivering the sermon, Pastor C. Kiwiet said the word of God is able to change lives and circumstances.

“Prayer is very important, it is a gift from God through which we are able to connect with God. The condition of a nation is an indication of how much that nation prays and prayer is able to change the condition of a nation,” he said.

He quoted the Bible, 2 Chronicles 7:13.

“It is time that we humble ourselves, go on our knees and pray before God. If we want prayer to be effective, ask for forgiveness first. Our only hope is prayer,” he said
