EFF ‘threatens’ foreign doctor

2016-01-08 06:00

THE KZN Department of Health is worried about the safety of its foreign doctors in the province.

This follows the claim that the Economic Freedom Fighters demanded the resignation of E.G. Usher Memorial Hospital in Kokstad CEO Dr Mongi Assadi, a Tunisian national, using xenophobic language with alleged threats against Assadi’s life.

According to the department, the demand is “racially motivated”.

KZN health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said many South African-trained doctors have shown an unwillingness to work in rural areas.

“We thus cannot allow any individual or any member of whatever political party to threaten or harm such committed and hardworking professionals,” said Dhlomo.

He said Assadi has reported the matter to the police.

Dhlomo warned that this type of action may result in “dire consequences for the Kokstad community” if Assadi and other doctors decide to leave.

However, the EFF KZN leader Vusi Khoza said the issue of the CEO being a foreigner is not the issue.

He said the EFF is only offering leadership to a community that is already “up in arms”. However, he maintained the call for Assadi to resign.

“We can’t reward mediocracy. The hospital has fallen apart and the service offered there is below standard,” said Khoza.
