RAGING wildfires in Knysna have left a path of destruction and firefighters from across the country were dispatched to assist this week.

Twenty fire fighters from Kokstad left on Tuesday afternoon. KwaZulu-Natal communication officer for Working on Fire, Nompilo Zondi said another group of 23 fire fighters from Umzimkhulu were also sent to Knysna.

She said last weekend there were two reported fires - one in Ixopo and one in Shayamoya. “More than 300 firefighters from Working on Fire from Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and Free State have also been deployed.”

On June 26, Kokstad fire fighters contained a veld fire at the back Mount Currie Senior Secondary School.
The cause of fire was unknown.

Manager of Community Development Services in Greater Kokstad Municipality, Nyaniso Msiya warned smokers not to throw alive cigarette butts out their car window.
He said Kokstad and many areas are high-risk fire zones and people must be vigilant when making fires outdoors. He said the municipality has held campaigns to educate people about the dangers of fire and how to contain them should they become uncontrollable.

Homeless people who make fires outside at this time of the year will face the music, according to Msiya, and municipal by-laws about them will be strengthened. The fire season closes in October.
