THE Marhambeni village community in Umzimkhulu celebrated the traditional Umkhosi Wokweshwama (festival of the first fruits) on Saturday.

Traditional leaders and officials from Co-operative Government and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) joined in the celebrations dressed in traditional outfits.

Inkosi Wilson Ntlabathi, is the acting inkosi for the area on behalf of Inkosi Bhekizizwe Bishop, who is a policeman.
Ntlabathi said the purpose of the event is to encourage people to use their land to produce food.

“We don’t have mines here. People must practice agriculture to produce food. We plant spinach, mushrooms, pumpkin and maize and we only harvest our products after the inkosi has tasted them. “This is our culture and we thank government for supporting it,” he said.

Virginity testing of young girls was also promoted at the event and many were tested on Sunday.
Ntlabathi said virginity testing is a means of ensuring that young girls stay away from any sexual activity when they are young or until they are married.
