FRANCE van Niekerk has been appointed acting area commissioner by the Department of Correctional Services in the Kokstad management area after the former commissioner Eric Mfenqe left for the Western Cape after spending 18 months in Kokstad.

A send-off for Mfenqe was held at the Kokstad City Hall last Wednesday and Department of Correctional Service staff and stakeholders thanked him for his work.

The head of Matatiele Correctional Centre, Thobela Ndatyana said Mfenqe’s exit is painful because many staff members were still learning valuable leadership skills from him.
“Mfenqe was strict, but also soft on staff members. He empowered many and we will miss him,” said Ndatyana.

Mfenqe thanked staff and management of the Department of Correctional Service who gave him opportunity to lead. He said through his hard work the area received clean audit outcomes from the Auditor-General.

“I want to thank management of the Department of Correctional Service for not trying to exert influence on my work, instead they allowed me to work independently. I will miss the Kokstad staff,” said Mfenqe.
