SOME ATMs in Umzimkhulu have notices, which the Fever reporter has seen, which warn people about thugs who rob people drawing money at the ATM by pretending to be police, and then demand the money.

So, in order to fight crime, communities have started sub-community forums that will help in the fight against crime in the CBD, and rural areas.

At the launch of the forums a march was held warning people about crime in the CBD.

Mveliso Nohlaba, the chairperson of Community Police Forum in the area said 32 sub-community forums have been established.
The sub-community forums have more than 100 members, who will patrol the CBD day and night until February, 2017.

“We want people to be safe when withdrawing money at ATMs. We are going strengthen our patrols next to ATMs and busy shops,” said Nohlaba.

He asked people not to take the law into their own hands by arresting and beating thugs.

However, forum members don’t have firearms or handcuffs, which SAPS members have.

“We use torches that have been supplied by police to patrol at night.
“We also use our cellphones to report crime to police. The time has arrived for us to fight crime,” said Nohlaba.

The initiative is supported by communities and the SAPS.
