AT a media briefing on Wednesday in council chambers, the Greater Kokstad Municipality Ward 5 councillor, Ntobeko Mavuka, said the municipality is committed to sports development in Kokstad.

Mavuka was responding to questions about the renovation of Bhongweni stadium which has been going on for more than a year.

“The Bhongweni stadium is not finished yet. We are not satisfied with the artificial turf put on by the contractor because it is not of a standard we want.”

He said the municipality is busy with the construction of other sports facilities around Kokstad that will relieve the pressure on Riverview and Oval sports grounds.

“That shows that we are focussing on the development of sport in our communities.”

He called on organisations, especially government departments, to be part of the Work and Play programme that encourages workers to play sport such soccer, volleyball and netball.

“The Work and Play programme is a great initiative that helps workers from different sectors to come together and play and interact outside the work environment.
“We already have workers from GKM, health, agriculture, correctional services departments, SAPS, Working on Fire and shops around Kokstad who are participating in tournaments.

“It's great fun,” Mavuka said.
